I once dreamed in color—fashion, journalism, writing, aiming to make my mark in the world through creativity, eloquence, and vision. But dreams don’t always come true the way you imagine them. With little support, and even less belief in my corner, I turned away from what lit me up inside and stepped into a career in law enforcement—a world that couldn’t have been further from the one I once longed for. This is a story about what happens when your life detours, when you end up somewhere you never thought you’d be, and the world you find there is darker than you ever expected.
My name is Sarah Smith, and this is how it unfolded.
During my early years, I aspired to pursue a career with esteemed publications such as Vogue or Vanity Fair. I was confident that my path would lead me into the field of fashion journalism rather than assignments like reviewing casual food establishments or composing copy for everyday products. Or writing follow-up reports. Even at the age of twelve, I regarded fashion journalism as my intended vocation, though this ambition had yet to be widely recognized.
Somewhere, there’s a Polaroid of me from the early 1990s, capturing a moment of youthful creativity. I’m wearing my mother’s mismatched stilettos (one black, one navy, because even then I appreciated contrast), a hot pink scarf wrapped around my head like Carmen Sandiego’s rebellious niece, and my dad’s oversized trench coat cinched at the waist with a jump rope. With a hairbrush in one hand and a composition notebook in the other, I wasn’t just playing dress-up; I was reporting live from Paris Fashion Week, right there in our suburban kitchen and the cracked tile of the downstairs bathroom. That day, I even sprained my ankle attempting a quick turn in the hallway.
Throughout my journey, journalism has presented its own set of challenges. I’ve always recognized the power of imagery, language, and narrative, along with the importance of unwavering conviction. However, as circumstances changed, I, like many others facing unexpected challenges, had to temporarily set aside my writing pursuits to focus on daily responsibilities. Turning aspirations into reality often proves more challenging than anticipated. After graduating from middle school, I moved on to high school and eventually continued to college.
